What Is a CEREC Same-Day Crown?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It is a CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) system that allows your dentist to design, mill, and place a permanent ceramic crown in a single visit -- typically 60 to 90 minutes from start to finish.
Traditional crowns require two appointments separated by two to three weeks. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the tooth, takes an impression (often with messy putty), and places a fragile temporary crown. The impression ships to an outside dental lab, where a technician hand-crafts the permanent crown. At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is cemented.
With CEREC technology at Innova Smiles, the entire process happens in one visit. There is no temporary crown, no impression putty, and no second appointment.
How Same-Day Crowns Work at Innova Smiles
Step 1: Digital Scanning (5 Minutes)
After preparing the tooth, Dr. Fatima uses a TRIOS intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D digital model of your tooth and surrounding teeth. The scan replaces the traditional putty impression -- it is faster, more accurate, and significantly more comfortable. You can breathe normally throughout.
Step 2: Digital Design (10-15 Minutes)
The 3D scan feeds directly into CEREC software, where Dr. Fatima designs your crown on-screen. She adjusts the shape, contours, and bite contact points to match your natural tooth anatomy. You can see your crown being designed in real time on the chairside monitor.
Step 3: In-Office Milling (12-15 Minutes)
The design file transfers wirelessly to the CEREC milling unit. A solid block of high-strength ceramic (typically lithium disilicate or zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate) is precision-milled by diamond burs into your custom crown. The milling takes about 12 to 15 minutes.
Step 4: Staining, Glazing & Bonding (15-20 Minutes)
Dr. Fatima hand-stains and glazes the crown to match your natural tooth shade, then fires it in a crystallization oven to achieve final strength and translucency. The finished crown is bonded to your prepared tooth with resin cement and your bite is carefully verified.
Total chair time: approximately 90 minutes. You leave with a permanent crown, not a temporary.

When a Lab Crown May Be Preferred
CEREC handles the vast majority of crown cases. However, traditional lab crowns remain the better choice for:
- Full-zirconia crowns for back teeth under extreme bite forces (bruxism patients who also need a night guard)
- Complex shade matching on front teeth requiring layered porcelain artistry
- Multi-unit bridges spanning three or more teeth
Dr. Fatima evaluates each case individually and recommends the approach that delivers the best long-term result for your specific situation.
How Long Do CEREC Crowns Last?
Research published in the Journal of Dental Research shows that CEREC crowns have a survival rate of 95.5% at 9 years -- comparable to traditional lab-fabricated crowns. A 2023 systematic review in Clinical Oral Investigations found no statistically significant difference in longevity between CAD/CAM crowns and conventionally fabricated crowns over 10-year follow-up periods.
With proper care, a CEREC crown typically lasts 10 to 15 years or longer. The most important factors for longevity are:
- Maintaining good oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, regular dental exams)
- Avoiding habits like chewing ice, opening packages with your teeth, or biting fingernails
- Wearing a custom night guard if you grind your teeth
- Attending regular dental checkups so Dr. Fatima can monitor the crown's integrity
Who Needs a Dental Crown?
A crown may be recommended when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but does not need extraction. Common situations include:
- Large cavities that weaken more than half the tooth structure
- Cracked or broken teeth where the remaining structure needs protection
- After a root canal to protect the weakened, hollowed-out tooth
- Severely worn teeth from grinding or acid erosion
- Replacing an old, failing crown that has decay at the margins
- Cosmetic improvement of a misshapen or severely discolored tooth

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I feel anything during a CEREC crown appointment? The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia before any preparation, so most patients feel pressure but not pain during the work. Dr. Fatima also offers nitrous oxide and DentalVibe vibration anesthesia for patients who feel anxious about dental procedures.
How do I care for my new crown? Treat it like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss daily, and keep your regular cleaning appointments. Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pens. The crown itself cannot develop cavities, but the tooth beneath the crown margin can, so oral hygiene is essential.
Can CEREC crowns match my natural tooth color? Yes. CEREC ceramic blocks come in a wide range of shades and translucencies. Dr. Fatima hand-stains and glazes each crown to blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. For most patients, the crown is virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth.
Is same-day crown technology new? CEREC was developed in 1985 and has been refined for over 40 years. More than 50 million CEREC restorations have been placed worldwide. The current generation of CEREC software and milling hardware produces restorations with accuracy measured in microns.
What to Expect After Your Crown Appointment
The first 24 hours after a same-day crown follow the same pattern as a traditional crown placement. The tooth is numb for 2 to 4 hours after the local anesthetic. While you wait for sensation to return:
- Avoid chewing on the crown side until numbness wears off (you can bite your cheek without realizing).
- Hot beverages should wait until you can feel temperature on the affected side.
- Mild gum tenderness around the crown margin is normal for 1 to 3 days. Over-the-counter ibuprofen handles this for most patients.
- Sensitivity to cold can persist for 1 to 4 weeks while the tooth's pulp adjusts to the new restoration. Persistent or sharp pain past 4 weeks should be reported so we can verify the bite and bond are correct.
Long-term, treat the crown like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss daily (use a threader if the crown is on a back tooth and floss snaps), and keep your six-month dental exam appointments so we can check the margin where the crown meets your natural tooth.
Factors That Affect How Long Your Crown Lasts
Studies tracking CEREC crowns over multi-year follow-up periods consistently identify a small set of factors as the main predictors of longevity. Patients who do well across all of them tend to see the upper end of the 10 to 15 year range; patients who skip one or more often need replacement sooner.
- Bite force and grinding habits. Patients who grind or clench (bruxism) generate forces that can chip even high-strength ceramic. A custom night guard is a meaningful investment if you grind.
- Marginal hygiene. The seam where the crown meets the natural tooth is the cavity-prone area. Daily flossing along that margin is the single biggest controllable factor.
- Diet and acidic exposure. Frequent acidic drinks (sports drinks, soda, citrus) erode the natural tooth structure under the crown over time. The crown itself is unaffected, but the tooth supporting it can be.
- Existing periodontal status. Crowns placed on teeth with active gum disease have shorter survival than crowns placed on healthy supporting structures. Routine cleanings keep this in check.
- Material selection. Lithium disilicate (e.max) and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate are the materials we use most often at Innova Smiles. Both have well-documented multi-year survival data; we choose between them based on the location of the tooth and the bite forces involved.
Dr. Fatima walks through these at the appointment so you know what is in your control and what is biology.
