Not Sure Where to Start?
During the extraction, you should feel pressure, not sharp pain. We apply premium topical numbing gel before the anesthetic injection and use DentalVibe vibration anesthesia to make the numbing process virtually painless. Local anesthesia is used to fully numb the area before treatment begins. After the procedure, mild soreness is normal for 24 to 48 hours and is well-managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen. We provide a detailed aftercare kit with gauze, written instructions, and dietary recommendations to support a smooth recovery. Call (508) 481-0110 to discuss your specific situation and comfort options.
For a simple extraction, most patients feel normal within 24–48 hours and can return to regular activities the next day. For surgical extractions and wisdom teeth removal, recovery typically takes 3–5 days, with most swelling and discomfort resolving by day 3. Full tissue healing of the socket takes 1–2 weeks, while bone healing is complete within 3–6 months. Following our aftercare instructions carefully is the single most important factor in a smooth, fast recovery.
Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves before the socket heals, exposing the underlying bone to air and bacteria. It causes intense, throbbing pain beginning 2–3 days after extraction, distinct from normal post-procedure soreness. To prevent dry socket: avoid straws, spitting, smoking, and vigorous rinsing for 24 hours after extraction. If you develop worsening pain after day 2, call us immediately, we treat dry socket quickly and effectively.
We always try to save your natural tooth first, a root canal is almost always preferable to extraction when feasible. Root canal therapy is appropriate when the tooth structure is intact enough to support a crown after infection removal. Extraction becomes necessary when the tooth is cracked below the gumline, has severe decay that cannot be restored, the bone support is too compromised to save the tooth, or a root canal has previously failed. We will review your X-rays and tooth structure to give you an honest recommendation.
For the first 24 hours, stick to soft, cool foods, yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and pudding. Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods on the extraction side for 3–5 days. Gradually reintroduce normal foods as comfort allows. Avoid alcohol and very hot foods for the first 24 hours. Most patients return to a normal diet within a week, though some tenderness at the site may persist for a couple of weeks.
With the exception of wisdom teeth, yes, every missing tooth should eventually be replaced. An empty socket allows neighboring teeth to shift and tilt into the gap, alters your bite, and triggers progressive bone loss in the jaw. The gold standard replacement is a dental implant, which prevents bone loss and functions like a natural tooth. Dental bridges and partial dentures are also available options. We typically recommend waiting until the extraction site has fully healed (6–8 weeks minimum) before beginning implant planning.
